Canadian University develops digital microfluidic platform for dry serum analysis

Aaron Wheeler, a professor of Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) at the University of Toronto, Canada, has developed a system that can quickly, accurately and automatically analyze serum using laboratory wafers. This new method of replacing traditional blood sampling is to store blood samples in the form of dried blood spots (DBSs). Only a few microliters of blood is drawn from a vein and wiped on the filter paper to obtain the sample. The digital microfluidic platform developed by Professor Wheeler automates the entire analysis process, using electronic signals to manipulate droplets into samples and extract the substances to be analyzed. The whole process is faster, more accurate, and the risk of errors is less. The research results have been published in the "Lab on a Chip" (Lab on a Chip) journal, and has submitted a patent application, is currently seeking commercial feasibility.
