An eighteenth-century palazzo where the sculptural furniture designed by Vincenzo De Cotiis stands out. The architect’s flat in Milan is a perfect blend of raw and brutalist elegance. Ready to step inside?
In an old eighteenth-century flat in Milan, architect Vincenzo De Cotiis has transformed his home into a unique space that feels both monumental and livable. It's like stepping into a sculpture made for living. The apartment, located in a hidden alley of the Magenta district, spans 300 square meters and features a contemporary design that blends seamlessly with its historical roots.
Vincenzo De Cotiis believes that people often overdo it by removing original layers such as paint, wallpaper, false ceilings, and carpets—elements that are part of the building's true character. Instead, he embraces imperfection and finds beauty in what time has left behind. The colors, naturally faded by years of sunlight, create a warm and inviting atmosphere. His modern design reflects a deep appreciation for textures, organic shapes, and light.
“We spent a lot of time removing added layers—years of paint, paper, false ceilings, and terrible carpets. What was underneath, in a state of wonderful imperfection, was incredible. All the colors had been bleached by decades of sun exposure. The effect is warm and welcoming, which is one of the key elements of my style, reflecting my love for textures, organic forms, and light.†– Vincenzo De Cotiis
The space is completed with patinated brass, hiding all electrical fixtures and switches. The large area includes a dining room, two living rooms, one bedroom, one bathroom, two dressing rooms, a kitchen, and an office. Vincenzo De Cotiis says he doesn't follow interior design trends but values individual expression, something clearly reflected in his Milan home.
