Perkins+Will, a renowned design firm based in Chicago, recently unveiled its new downtown Minneapolis office, marking a significant shift from its previous location. After 15 years in the historic Essex Building at 84 Tenth St. S., the firm moved into a more compact, single-floor space. Despite reducing the total square footage by nearly half, the new office was designed with efficiency and flexibility in mind.
The new space features a striking 200-foot-long gallery wall that stretches the length of the office. This wall includes cubbies for supplies, small phone booths, print rooms, and presentation screens. The design emphasizes open collaboration, allowing staff to easily interact and maintain a sense of unity across the entire floor.
“We believe a design studio works best when everyone is on the same level,†said Dave Dimond, Design Principal at the Minneapolis office. “Now, I can stand up and almost see anyone in the office.â€
The firm took a “do no harm†approach during the renovation, preserving original concrete floors and exposed ceilings. Furniture is not fixed to the floor, making it easy to reconfigure for meetings or group discussions. Sustainability was also a key focus—half of the materials used were repurposed from the old office, and much of the wood came from rapidly renewable sources like Aspen.
The office’s three meeting rooms are named after influential figures in design: landscape architects Anna and Lawrence Halprin, interior designer Florence Knoll, and IDS Center architect Philip Johnson. This tribute reflects the firm’s deep respect for the disciplines of architecture, urban design, and interior design.
As Perkins+Will continues to evolve, this new space serves as both a functional workspace and a celebration of design heritage. It’s a clear statement of the firm’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.
