The Royal Hotel, designed by the legendary Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, has undergone a stunning transformation, blending its original charm with modern updates. Now known as the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, this iconic building is not only a symbol of Danish modernist architecture but also a design landmark that continues to inspire.
The recent renovation, led by Copenhagen-based studio Space Copenhagen, focused on preserving the hotel’s unique character while introducing contemporary elements. The project included the complete redesign of 259 guest rooms and suites, the lobby, meeting spaces, and the introduction of a new restaurant, originally opened in 1960.
One of the most notable aspects of the renovation was the careful restoration of Jacobsen's original furniture pieces, such as the Egg, Swan, and Drop chairs. These timeless designs were updated with new fabrics from Kvadrat, created in collaboration with designer Raf Simons, while still maintaining their classic appeal.
The lobby now features a more open layout, with marble floors and wood wall panels enhancing the space’s elegance. Floor-to-ceiling wooden screens help define different areas, adding both structure and style. The famous spiral staircase remains, now enhanced with leather-wrapped handrails and an illuminated halo above it, creating a dramatic focal point.
Guest rooms have been reimagined to offer comfort and warmth, with deep marble window sills, upholstered beds, and the Fly Sofa bringing a cozy feel. Natural light and city views are maximized through the horizontal bands of windows that wrap around the building.
The renovation is expected to be completed by spring 2018, with the remaining guest rooms and additional areas undergoing final touches. This project showcases how a historic building can be revitalized without losing its soul—blending past and present into a cohesive, inspiring space.
