Some problems in domestic pharmaceutical packaging design

China's packaging design industry has historically lagged behind global standards, and the market for pharmaceutical packaging is no exception. Despite some progress, there are still numerous challenges that need to be addressed in order to improve competitiveness on an international scale. Understanding these issues can help drive innovation and better solutions in the future. Currently, many Chinese pharmaceutical companies still rely on traditional paper-based packaging, which is vulnerable to moisture and dust. In contrast, heat shrinkable film packaging—widely used internationally—is a more advanced option. It offers high strength, excellent transparency, and superior protection against moisture and dust, while also being cost-effective. For example, when packaging 10 or 20 bottles of medication, the cost per unit for heat shrinkable film is between 0.03 and 0.07 yuan, compared to 0.5 to 2 yuan for cardboard boxes. While many domestically produced tablets and capsules are sealed in bottles that offer basic protection from light, moisture, and oxidation, their technological value remains low. For specialized medications, PVC hard sheets and PVC/PE composite materials are commonly used for blister packs, which effectively prevent degradation and extend shelf life. In terms of glass packaging, there is still a gap in material quality. Internationally, pharmaceutical-grade A-grade glass is widely used due to its stability and ability to protect the chemical integrity of medicines. Additionally, the breakage surface is smooth and free of micro-cracks. However, most domestic manufacturers still use B-grade glass, with only joint ventures and large state-owned enterprises using a small amount of A-grade material. Looking ahead, the pharmaceutical packaging market is expected to undergo significant changes. Container packaging will increasingly shift toward cardboard boxes and blister packs, while bottle caps and closures may see reduced usage. Labels and printed materials will play a more critical role. Over time, more drugs may be sold through drug delivery systems such as nasal sprays instead of injections. Needle-free injection options may also become more common, even though they don’t necessarily increase container use. These innovations could boost market share through added value and convenience. Cardboard box usage might decline if the industry doesn’t see major technological advancements. Meanwhile, improvements in printing methods are enhancing the visual appeal of packaging, helping to build brand identity and support anti-counterfeiting efforts. Technologies like near-infrared fluorophore stripes, temperature-sensitive inks, smart inks, photochromic inks, and UV inks are already being explored but are not yet fully integrated into China’s pharmaceutical packaging industry. As highlighted by the editor of China Packaging Network, the development of the packaging market depends heavily on design innovation. Although the field is still maturing, addressing current challenges can lead to quick and effective solutions. With continued attention and investment, China's pharmaceutical packaging sector has the potential to catch up and even lead in the global market.
