How To Package Steel Pipes – The Packaging Doctor
The Surgery Is Now Open

Good Afternoon Doctor,
I work for a small cable company that provides various types of cables, wires, and pipes. We deal with steel pipes that are transported in vans with dimensions of 24x16x12 inches. Ideally, I'd like to find a packaging solution that fits snugly so the pipes don't move around during transit. I’m looking for something simple and efficient because I’ll be handling the packing myself. Since the pipes are quite durable, I’m not overly concerned about additional protection—just something to keep them dry and clean during transportation.
Cheers,
Martin
Hi Martin,
Based on your description, it sounds like you're looking for a packaging option that’s readily available off-the-shelf rather than going through the hassle of custom solutions. After reviewing our inventory, the closest standard box size I found is 24x18x18 inches, which might be slightly larger than what you need. Given your desire to avoid using void fill, I’d suggest considering a mailing bag instead. A tough, grey polythene mailing bag could provide adequate protection for your steel pipes while remaining lightweight. This will help save space on the van and reduce shipping costs since you’ll be able to transport more items efficiently. For your specific dimensions, I’d recommend either a 550x750mm or 700x850mm size, which should snugly fit the pipes without requiring extra filler.
Let me know if this works for you or if you need further advice. Happy to help! Best wishes,
The Packaging Doctor
