The harmonious interior of the Secto Design HQ

The Harmonious Heart of Secto Design HQ

On the outskirts of Helsinki, nestled in the quaint town of Kauniainen, lies the headquarters of Secto Design—a place steeped in history and innovation. This isn’t just any office; it’s where the magic began for Secto Design, serving as a cornerstone for the company’s growth and success. It was here, in 1995, that Tuula Jusélius, the visionary founder, met Seppo Koho, the talented architect who would go on to design every Secto Design lamp. Back then, the building was Jusélius’ personal family home. Over the years, it underwent a significant transformation, evolving into the unique and fully functional office and showroom it is today. From the outside, the building doesn’t immediately scream “headquarters.” It retains its charm as a cozy family home, surrounded by lush woodland areas. Employees love taking breaks amidst nature, whether it’s sitting in the garden or strolling along the many serene paths nearby. Even the local wildlife seems to appreciate the tranquility—squirrels and birds frequently join the team on the back terrace, creating an almost idyllic scene. Stepping inside, however, reveals a world of elegance and functionality. The entrance immediately captivates with a striking arrangement of Kuulto ceiling lamps, complemented by beautiful wooden knot-free panels. The hall continues the theme of sophistication, adorned with linen textile paneling and matching cupboards. Here, the initial display of the Secto Design collection begins to unfold, showcasing the timeless beauty of their products. Our office is more than just a workspace—it’s also the company’s showroom in Finland, available by appointment only. On the lower level, the entire collection is elegantly displayed, demonstrating how each piece works harmoniously together. Every room is thoughtfully equipped with the perfect Secto Design lamps to meet its specific lighting needs. For instance, the workstations and kitchen island are beautifully illuminated by Owalo pendants, whose elongated shapes provide efficient and practical lighting. In the meeting room, a vintage Alvar Aalto table sits beneath three Atto pendant lamps, arranged in a straight line above it. These pendants not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the room’s ambiance during lengthy discussions. The comfortable wood chairs in the room are a nod to another Scandinavian design icon, Norwegian Hans Brattrud. During colder months, the office transforms into a cozy retreat. Surrounding the fireplace on the upper landing are inviting sofas, creating a warm and inviting space. Next to them stands a solid wooden conference table, reminiscent of Secto Design’s early furniture collection before they focused solely on lighting. To honor this heritage, the common area is exclusively lit with pendant, wall, and floor lamps from the original Secto line. The high wooden ceilings contribute to the sense of spaciousness, making the upper level feel grand yet welcoming. Above the staircase, a cluster of Kontro pendant lamps provides both practical and aesthetic lighting, ensuring safety and style. Secto Design’s commitment to sustainability shines through in the choice of materials throughout the building. Natural elements dominate the space, with lamps crafted from certified local birch providing a warm, uplifting glow. This harmonizes beautifully with the abundant natural light streaming in through the large windows. Every detail in the office reflects the brand’s dedication to quality, functionality, and sustainability. It’s not just a workplace—it’s a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship that have defined Secto Design for decades.
