How to Make a Doll Mattress
Supplies
To create your own doll mattress, you'll need the following materials:
- FABRIC – About half a yard (0.9 meters) of fabric for most 18-inch doll beds. Cotton fabric is ideal for sewing. I used quilting cotton, which is light to medium weight and tightly woven. It comes in many colors and patterns and is easy to find.
- STUFFING – Polyester or foam stuffing. If you don't have any, you can use fabric scraps as a budget-friendly alternative. Just cut them into small pieces to avoid lumps.

Topics Covered
Step 1 - Measure the Bed
Start by measuring the base of your doll’s bed. This one was from IKEA and measures 12 by 19 inches (30.5x48.2 cm) at the wooden base.
Tip: Be sure to measure just the base, not the sides. You want the mattress to fit snugly inside the bed frame.
Step 2 - The Doll Mattress Pattern
Cut two pieces of fabric to the size of the bed base plus a 1-inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance around all sides. So for a 12x19 inch base, you’ll need 14x21 inch (35.5x53.3 cm) pieces.

Step 3 - Stitch the Sides
With the right sides together, sew around the edges of the fabric with a ¼ inch (6 mm) seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch (7.5 cm) gap at one of the short ends. It looks best if you leave the gap at the end of the mattress.

Step 4 - Box the Corners
Box the corners by pressing the seams open and aligning the top and bottom. Mark across at 1 ½ inches (4 cm). This gives the mattress some height and makes it look more realistic.

Stitch across the boxed corners and trim them straight.

Step 5 - Stuff the Doll Mattress
Turn the mattress right side out and begin stuffing it. If using polyester fill, break it into small tufts for even distribution. Make sure to pack the corners for shape and stability. Test the mattress on the bed before closing the gap to ensure it lies flat.

Step 6 - Close the Gap
Use a ladder stitch to hand-sew the gap closed for an invisible finish.
