Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the United States have found that human embryonic stem cells can differentiate into a previously unknown liver progenitor cell, which is an early progeny of stem cells that produces mature functional hepatocytes. The researchers confirmed the functionality of hepatocytes produced by this progenitor cell because these hepatocytes can be infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), in which HCV can only infect liver cells.
