Dubai government orders 3D printed flight backpack for fire department

At the Dubai Air Show, the city's internal security forces and New Zealand Martin Aircraft ordered 20 3D printed jetpacks, each priced at $250,000, and will be delivered in the near future. It is understood that these high-tech equipment will be used by the city's fire department to protect the bustling city with this tall building.

Martin Aircraft expects to deliver the first professional-grade flight backpacks later in 2016, while a range of personal flight backpacks for the consumer market will be available in mid-2017.

It is understood that the 3D printed flight backpack jet bag ordered by the Dubai government is driven by a two-liter, two-stroke 200-horsepower V4 engine with a maximum flight speed of 45 mph and a maximum flight altitude of 3,000 ft. The flying machine made of 3D printing and carbon fiber parts can fly for up to 45 minutes at a time and carry about 260 pounds. This load capacity is sufficient to support a firefighter with medical equipment. Martin Aircraft hopes that the 45-minute flight time will be further extended after the improved engine application. Martin Aircraft CEO Peter Coker is currently working with an undisclosed engine company to develop a more powerful system. "We hope to have something to come out early next year," he explained.

The Dubai government also ordered simulators and a set of training materials from Martin Aircraft to train its firefighters to use the equipment correctly. After the firefighters complete the equipment operation training, the 3D printed flight backpack will be used for reconnaissance and rescue purposes.

“Sometimes people sometimes escape to the top of the building during a fire. Sometimes the ladder can't get there, and you can't always use the elevator.” Ali Hassan Almutawa, director of the Dubai Interior Department, told the BBC: “We think, rescue And fire fighting is the primary role that this equipment must play first. But there may be many other uses. For example, it can enter a confined space to estimate the situation, and we also intend to install a thermal imaging camera."

Although many people have doubts about the safety of this personal aircraft, Martin Aircraft has designed several important safety devices for this purpose. For example, if the operator suddenly releases control of the flying backpack, his built-in computer will automatically stabilize his flight status.

This part of the 3D printed flying backpack is also different from the rest of the market. Some people say it is more similar to a personal helicopter than the kind of rocket ejector that we see in film and television works. The wind turbine with the shroud pushes the entire device off the ground.
