Fuji Xerox and the SFC Research Institute of Keio University in Japan (Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture) jointly developed the data format "FAV" (FAbricatable Voxel) for 3D printers that enhances the expressiveness of the styling in the past, and in July 2016. This format not only has the surface information of the 3D model, but also has information such as internal structure, color, material, and joint strength, and can output the shaped object without complicated processes.
Existing data formats use polygons to describe the surface of a 3D model, while new formats represent a 3D model with voxels (3D pixels). Since information such as color and material can be given to each voxel one by one, the expressive power when outputted by a 3D printer is improved.
Unlike the past using triangle rendering, the new FAV format uses voxel Voxel rendering.
However, before using this, if you want to use 3D printers to output complex shapes of different colors and materials, you should not only design the structure separately, but also use the software that comes with the 3D printer to create model data or 3D for 3D CAD. The data read by the scanner is assigned color and materials, and other operations such as repairing corrupted data during data processing are generated.

Therefore, Fuji Xerox and Keio University have integrated the experience accumulated in the development of 3D data processing software with the representative of the Social Manufacturing Research Center of SFC Research Institute and Professor of Environmental Information, and Fuji Xerox's image processing technology. A new format has been produced. This format makes it easy to output shapes with color and material information without performing the above complex tasks.
The voxel format makes it easy to adjust the internal structure according to the model volume and shape.
