The team tested pancreatic cancer cells and found a negative correlation between the tumor suppressor gene miR-34a and the oncogene PLK1. When the level of miR-34a is low in a mouse model of pancreatic cancer, the level of oncogene is high. This correlation is very meaningful for the treatment of malignant tumors.

But the research team needs to further confirm whether humans also have such a correlation. As a result, the researchers analyzed samples from patients with pancreatic cancer and found the same genomic pattern as in the mouse model of pancreatic cancer.

As a result, researchers have invented a new type of nanoparticle that selectively delivers genetic material to tumors and avoids side effects on surrounding healthy tissue.

Professor Satchi-Fainaro said, "We designed a nanocarrier to transport two "passengers": (1) miR-34a that degrades hundreds of oncogenes; (2) small interfering RNAs that silence individual genes of PLK1 ( siRNA) These are delivered directly to the tumor site to alter the molecular markers of the cancer cell, leaving the tumor in a dormant state or completely disappearing.

Professor Satchi-Fainaro went on to say that nanoparticles are like a "taxi" carrying two important passengers, keeping the "passengers" and other parts of the body safe, targeting only the tumor tissue. Once it is stopped, an enzyme present in pancreatic cancer causes the carrier to biodegrade, thereby releasing the therapeutic drug in the tumor cells.

To test this finding, the researchers injected the new nanoparticle into mice with pancreatic tumors and significantly prolonged the survival of mice by balancing these two goals.

According to Professor Satchi-Fainaro, this treatment takes into account the entire genome model and is expected to be the basis for the development of cocktails for this deadly disease and other cancers.
