Printing Technology: Application of Thin Paper in Digital Printing and Binding

At present, digital printing technology has advanced to a new stage. Whether it's toner-based, inkjet, or electronic ink technologies, they have all reached a relatively mature level. However, the use of thin paper in digital printing machines remains a challenging issue. The thin paper discussed in this article refers specifically to Bible paper with a grammage below 35g/m². During the digital printing process, such thin paper often faces issues like paper jams and ink penetration. Regardless of the ink technology used, paper feeding problems persist, and for inkjet systems, there are additional challenges like ink bleeding and low resolution. Moreover, the binding process for thin paper digital prints is more complex than traditional post-press methods. Take the HP Indigo 5600 digital press as an example. This machine uses electronic ink and can print on paper as thin as 0.07 mm, which corresponds to about 60–70g/m². To accommodate even thinner paper (below 35g/m²), the machine requires specific modifications and adjustments. This article explores the key challenges and solutions encountered during the transformation process of the HP Indigo 5600 when printing on ultra-thin paper, focusing on paper feeding, electronic ink adaptability, paper deformation, static electricity, and binding. Stable Paper Transport 1. Paper Cabinet Selection The HP Indigo 5600 digital press features four paper trays. The first tray is directly connected to the paper feed bridge, offering a short transmission path with minimal paper movement, making it ideal for thin paper. The second, third, and fourth trays are not recommended for thin paper due to their vertical feeding mechanism, which increases the risk of misfeeding. 2. Feida Suction System Feida suction involves spraying pulp onto a felt cloth, followed by squeezing, drying, calendering, and rewinding. This process creates small pinholes in the paper, which become more problematic as the paper becomes thinner. Thin paper tends to be less absorbent and more prone to double feeding. To address this, the paper must be smooth, firm, and have fewer pinholes. Additionally, the Feida system needs adjustment—reducing air volume and pressure helps prevent multiple sheets from being picked up at once. 3. Bridge Transfer The HP Indigo 5600’s bridge transfer system includes a paper positioning function, using suction to guide the paper. For thin paper, the suction pressure and airflow must be carefully adjusted to avoid curling and ensure smooth transport. 4. Gripping Mechanism Gripping teeth must be flat and apply even pressure to prevent paper deformation. The HP Indigo 5600 uses high-temperature blankets, so uneven grip pressure can cause wrinkles that become visible during printing. Ensuring consistent pressure is crucial for high-quality output. 5. Swing Arm Nozzle The swing arm nozzle is responsible for turning and delivering the paper. To maintain stability, the nozzles should be evenly distributed and adjusted for proper air pressure, ensuring the paper is held firmly without wrinkling. 6. Duplex Conveyor The duplex conveyor is used for double-sided printing, relying on steel balls to press the belt. When printing on thin paper, the steel ball material or quality may need to be adjusted based on the paper’s surface and stiffness. Adding a paper guide device also helps counteract air currents during operation, ensuring smoother feeding.
