Custom running shoes are usually only available to professional athletes, but this may change soon. Adidas announced the concept of a 3D printed running shoe midsole and hopes to bring related products to the public. Futurecraft 3D running shoes will be modeled according to the user's foot shape, making the shoes more comfortable.
Some companies, such as Sols, are already making custom 3D printed insoles to improve shoe comfort. Nonetheless, for companies like Adidas, it is a major milestone in popularizing 3D printing technology.
The Futurecraft 3D midsole was developed in collaboration with 3D printing company Materialise. The mezzanine can meet the user's need for the cushion, matching the foot shape and the pressure point of each foot. Adidas calls it the “elastic, fully permeable carbon fiber version of the athlete’s own footprint.â€
Adidas said at the press conference that the company's ultimate goal is to allow customers to walk into the store and run on the treadmill for a while to leave the store with their 3D printed running shoes.
Adidas told Gizmag that the midsole was printed from a material called Modified Desmopan TPU, which was produced by Bayer. Raw materials will be supplied to Materialise for 3D printing. The midsole is printed and the upper is placed at Adidas' production center in Schäinfeld, Germany.
The Futurecraft 3D midsole is part of the Adidas Futurecraft project. Adidas said the project's goal is to innovate all production areas through open source cooperation and processes, and to announce more innovative partnerships in the next six months.
