Kraft Saucer Awarded Packaging Award

Kraft Food Services (Glenview, IL) received the Packaging of the Year award from the Atlanta Condiment Association in October. The award-winning package is a 1-gallon, high-density polypropylene (HDPP) bottle with a unique wide-mouth design. It uses a handle with a fingerprint and a finger groove for easy grip; plus a knob-style wide-mouth cap design makes it easy to pour.

This bottle was packaged by Kraft's internal design and Liquid Container Packaging (West Chicago, Illinois) using extrusion blow molding. It replaces the original 1 gallon, press-fit round bottle. Kim Trinh, Kraft Food Service’s Product Category Business Director, said that the previous round bottle design was apt to contaminate the bottle after pouring oily seasonings; It is a painful process that the body can neither hold nor contaminate its hands. “This new bottle has a square design and a funnel-shaped design in the pouring part of the bottle mouth. The two sides form a V shape,” says Ron Olsen, head of Kraft Packaging. This tapered surface helps guide the smooth out of the condiment, while it also maintains the roundness of the bottleneck when it is poured.

Trinh also said that this knob cover is a big improvement over push-type lids. Even if the user holds the top of the bottle while the lid is open, the cap does not separate from the bottle. The injection-molded polypropylene cap with a diameter of 110 mm uses an induction-sealed metal foil film. In addition, the paper labels on the two panels of the bottle body use 4-color flexo printing. Kraft declined to disclose information about manufacturers of covers and paper labels.

"The response from this package is positive and positive," Trinh said. He added that Kraft seasonings still have an advantage over Other similar products on the market and don't pass on any burden to consumers.
